Kodak Easyshare P-850 Review

Despite its lopsided look, the Kodak EasyShare P850 feels well balanced. At 15.4 ounces with its slender rechargeable battery and SD card installed, it weighs just enough to feel substantial but not heavy. A 2.5-inch LCD occupies about two-thirds of the camera back; buttons and dials are scattered over the rest, as well as the top. At first, you might question the choice of external controls, but they make the camera quite usable, thanks to the combination of a highly customizable Program button and a command dial that scrolls through onscreen options such as aperture, shutter speed, ISO, and exposure compensation.

| "The P850 has features that beginners and enthusiasts will like. For the beginners there are numerous automatic and scene modes, a very easy-to-understand interface, support for camera and printer docks, and the best photo sharing system in the industry. Enthusiasts will dig the full manual controls, RAW format support, hot shoe and conversion lens support, and the custom spots on the mode dial. Both groups will like the P850's movie mode, with its VGA (30 fps) video quality and the ability to use the zoom lens during filming. The camera's playback mode was also nice, with nice still photo, RAW image, and movie editing features." |

| "he Kodak EasyShare P850 is the first Kodak camera to be equipped with a stabilized 12X optical zoom. Moreover, the other characteristics of the P850 are also valuable. The camera offers a 5-megapixel resolution, TIFF and RAW image formats, and is equipped with both a 2.5-inch LCD monitor and a high definition electronic viewfinder.
The P850 should be very popular and satisfy the needs of a wide range of users. Not only does it offer excellent features and can it yield excellent results with minimal user input, it is also able to offer a sufficient level of control for more advanced users and allow them to exercise their creativity." |

| The EasyShare P850, which has an image-stabilized 12x zoom Schneider-Kreuznach, is a direct competitor to the likes of Canon's S2 IS, Sony's H1 and Panasonic's FZ20 and is the first in a new class of 'advanced digital cameras', which Kodak hopes will provide an alternative to entry-level DSLRs.. As well as the new image stabilizing feature the P850 boasts RAW file capture and a flash hot shoe, plus a real wealth of photographic controls. |

| Review: "Kodak is expanding its offerings to include higher end features and SLR-like qualities. Enter the EasyShare P850. Sure, it's the baby of Kodak's Performance Series, but it has 5.1 megapixels and an optically stabilized 12x zoom lens. It joins the P880 and the P712 in the series that touts SLR-like bodies, long zoom lenses, and manual functionality. Like its other digital cameras though, Kodak claims that its Performance series models are easy to use.
The Kodak 850 delivers fair performance at low ISOs. Up to ISO 100, its performance should be good enough for most situations, including outdoor scenes in bright sunlight. At ISO 200 to 400, however, its range is limited, and users should avoid contrasty lighting. Interestingly, the 850's High Quality performance is much worse than its Low Quality results ? there is more of a difference between the two than we typically see. That's too bad, because it indicates how limited the High Quality range is."

| "Kodak's EasyShare line of digital cameras has long been a favorite among a wide range of consumers, as the cameras pretty universally live up to the "Easy" in their name. While somewhat more advanced than the typical EasyShare model, the new P850 offers a wide range of exposure and creative control without compromising usability. The P850 offers partial and full manual exposure modes for the more advanced consumers, but also maintains a healthy selection of automatic and preset shooting modes for novices. Plus, the P850 continues with Kodak's popular EasyShare features, including printer and camera dock compatibility, the Share menu for tagging images for printing, downloading, and emailing, as well as the Favorites mode for viewing a digital photo album." |
