HP Photosmart 8250 Review

This is the first desktop printer from HP to feature individual ink cartridges-six in all. This is a feature that's been available from Epson and Canon for quite some time, and HP has recognized the advantages of only replacing the color that's empty rather than placing three colors in one cartridge and wasting the remaining ink when one color goes dry. Although the cartridges look tiny, the page output is very impressive.
Overall image quality is very high, with nicely saturated colors, especially blues and greens. Along with the HP Vivera inks, print life has approached that of pigment ink printers-over 100 years when used with HP Premium Plus photo papers.

| There's a lot new in HP's Photosmart 8250, most gathered under the umbrella heading of Scaleable Printing Technology (SPT). This is quite a break from tradition for HP, at least for its home and SME printers, as the 8250 uses six separate ink cartridges, which aren't built into a replaceable print head. |

| We were impressed with the 8250's simplicity and ease of use, making it a perfect photo printer for newbies to digital photography. You can print directly from memory card or a camera (using PictBridge) - and its LCD screen lets you adjust images without the aid a computer. If you want to use your computer, you can do that too, of course. The new paper tray system is handy, though the top cover doesn't like to stay on. The Auto Sense technology detects what kind of paper is inserted, and if it's put in the wrong way, the printer will tell you. Another intelligent feature on the 8250 is how the printer warns you if there's not enough ink to print your photo. |

| "One of the perks of being a journalist is that we get to see many new products before they become public knowledge. Besides the new Epson R2400 and UltraChrome K3 ink set, there hasn't been much else to grab my attention, well that is not strictly true. HP took a number of technical journalists to Tenerife to show us their new range of printers, cameras, scanners etc. One item that caught my eye was the HP 8250 A4 printer. On the surface this printer looks much like any other printer I have seen, but it's what's under the bonnet is the real news.
The HP 8250 is perhaps one of the most interesting printers available, not just because it produces superb colour photographs but because it contains many advanced features, especially in the ink department. The most exciting aspect of this is how will HP use this technology in their future dedicated photo printers. I am convinced that HP have just led the way forward for photo printing. I look forward to seeing an A3 photo printer making full use of separate ink cartridges. But when? - I suspect this may be another year or so away." |

| Fast cars, fast games, now we have fast printers. Hewlett Packard claims that its new Photosmart 8250 inkjet photo printer produces 4 x 6in photos in under a quarter of a minute. We tried it out with borderless prints, which always take a bit longer. A 4 x 6in print using normal print mode took around 20 seconds and a borderless A4 photo took about two and a half minutes, making it a very quick printer indeed. |

| The HP Photosmart 8250, a replacement for the Photosmart 8450, retains the 4,800x1,200dpi resolution, the long-life Vivera inks, and the relatively speedy printing of its predecessor but replaces the old print engine with a radically redesigned one. Rather than using the old tricolor ink-cartridge systems with their built-in printheads, HP has switched to an innovative reservoir system fed from six separate ink tanks. The individually replaceable ink cartridges and recycling system coupled with bulk paper purchases mean 4x6-inch prints can cost as little as 24 cents each. Although it functions serviceably as a speedy text printer (especially with the optional duplexing attachment), the HP Photosmart 8250's real strength is as a personal photo lab. |
