Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Lens Review

Review Summary
Reader Score: 9.33 (out of 10)
With the introduction of the Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Lens, Canon has replaced one of its most popular lenses and its first image stabilized lens - the Canon EF 75-300mm f/4.5-5.6 IS. The 75-300mm IS lens was popular because of its useful focal length range, small size, light weight, midrange price and Image Stabilization. The Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Lens improves this overall package (sacrificing only price somewhat).

Sporting a 3rd generation image stabilizer, the Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Lens is designed to be handholdable at a shutter speed up to 3 f-stops slower than a non-stabilized lens at the same focal length. "Gyro sensors detect unwanted vibrations, triggering the corresponding movement of a correcting lens group perpendicular to the optical axis. This alters the light path, returning the image to its correct position on the sensor or film plane." [Canon]

The Canon EF70-300/4-5.6 IS USM is the replacement for the EF75-300/4-5.6 IS USM, but the difference is much more than just 5mm at the short end of the range. According to Canon, the new lens uses a low dispersion optical element for better image quality, digitally optimized coatings to lower flare, an improved IS system giving an extra stop of "handholdability" and a panning mode, faster autofocus and a zoom lock at 70mm to prevent "creep". This comes at a price however, which in this case is $650. The old lens (if you can find one) sells for around $450, so this is a $200 increase.

Review: "The EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM telephoto zoom lens has been developed to meet the high-performance standards that today's photographers demand. Improved Image Stabilizer Technology provides up to three stops of "shake" correction, and the "Mode 2" option stabilizes images while panning with a moving subject.

There really aren't any weak points to this lens optically, unless you count its rather slow maximum aperture range of f/4-f/5.6 against it. It does suffer in the build quality department though, with a rather plasticky feel and very lightweight construction."
