Sony Cyber-shot DSC-P200 Review

Review Summary
Reader Score: 10.00 (out of 10)
The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-P200 has been around for a while now and is something of a bestseller. It's easy to see why - the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-P200 is compact, stylish, well-built and takes good photographs that produce great A4 prints. As well as offering full auto and scene modes for beginners, the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-P200 also has a Manual exposure mode for the more experienced photographer who wants to take full control, although it would have been nice to see shutter and aperture priority modes too. This is a compact digital camera that will suit both the novice and more experienced photographer, as you can take as little or as much control as you like.

The modernist shape of the Cyber-shot DSC-P200 ($399.95 direct) certainly sets it apart in the compact cameras category. With its one rounded side and minimal yet formally balanced front, it will definitely draw attention. And as with past P-series models, Sony hasn't skimped on performance, either. But although the DSC-P200 performed similarly on our lab tests to the Canon PowerShot SD500 Digital Elph and is $100 cheaper, it doesn't match the SD500 in subjective image quality.

The Sony DSC-P200 is the most recent in Sony's highly popular line of subcompact "P-series" digital cameras, and is similar in many respects to the preceding P150 model. Offering a high-resolution 7.2 megapixel CCD, a 3x optical zoom lens, and an expanded range of nine preset Scene modes to choose from, the P200 is a capable, yet very compact, digital camera. New to the P200 is a larger, 2.0-inch LCD monitor, and a variety of other improvements, detailed below, all packed into a (very) slightly smaller body size. The Sony P200 is an excellent option for rank beginners and more experienced users alike, a nearly ideal "pocket" camera to pack along when there just isn't room or time to accommodate a larger or more complex model.

First Impressions (Preview): The P-series of Sony digital cameras turns five this year. To celebrate, they're putting out an upgrade to last year's Cyber-shot P150. The new Sony Cyber-shot DSC-P200 boasts 7.2 megapixels in a compact point-and-shoot form. The digital camera sticks with the classic P-series frame: a rectangle with a rounded left side. The P200 will be available in Europe and the United States in February 2005 for $399. The price is a welcome downgrade from the P150's retail price of $499. The two cameras are strikingly similar. They have the same 7.2 megapixels, 3x optical zoom lens and the same menus and options. The only difference is that the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-P200 has a larger 2-inch LCD and a wide groove along the top to provide a left finger grip and added shooting support.

The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-P200 is the latest in Sony's "P" line of point-and-shoot cameras. The P200 has a 7.2 megapixel CCD, 3x optical zoom, and a 2 inch LCD. The camera is very compact and fits nicely into a pocket and has excellent image quality in a stylish package that comes in silver, red, and black. This camera would be a good choice for a large range of people. It would make a great camera while out on the town with its size, style, and fast start up time to catch those spontaneous moments. It would be a good "parent" camera to catch those funny moments that kids make with its fast shutter speed and large image size (for good printing options). Also, there are enough manual options that would make this camera a good choice for an enthusiast as an "everyday" camera for those days when the 20 lb camera bag (with SLR and lenses) just isn't going to happen.

I'll come clean and admit that I didn't used to like Sony's digital cameras at all. I used to consider them over-priced, underpowered, clumsy, bulky and unattractively designed. I'll also freely admit that over the past couple of years I've been repeatedly forced to eat my words as the company has released one technically impressive and beautifully designed camera after another. The current range of Cyber-shot cameras are among the prettiest, best made and best performing cameras on the market, and it's no surprise that Sony is now the world leader in digital camera sales.

This replacement for the Sony Cyber Shot DSC-P150 adds no significant capabilities to the skimpy feature set of its predecessor. However, it retains its position as one of the most compact 7-megapixel models, offering good performance, outstanding battery life, and adequate photo quality. While competitors such as Pentax and Olympus offer lots of bonus features and zoom ranges longer than the P200's 3X zoom, 38mm-to-114mm (35mm equivalent) optics, this Sony upgrade is a good choice for casual snapshooters who want to make big prints and can live with nagging color-balance problems. Photo enthusiasts looking for shutter- or aperture-priority controls, TIFF or raw file formats, or other extra features should check out the competition.

"What you get with the P200 is a high resolution camera that does almost everything well. It is small enough to fit into any pocket (as long as the lens has retracted inside the body), it has a solid 3X optical zoom that?s complemented by either a standard 2X digital zoom or Sony's "Smart zoom" that borrows unused pixels to enlarge an image taken in one of the camera?s lower resolution settings. There is a small optical viewfinder for those times when it becomes difficult to view the LCD display outdoors. The controls are all fairly self-explanatory although an initial pass through the very good 98-page manual is definitely recommended."

I was very impressed with the P150 when we reviewed it last year, and the P200 - though by any measure a minor upgrade - builds on and adds to its appeal. The bigger screen and the inclusion of a manual white balance option are very welcome, and the price is even more appealing now the camera has been on the market for half a year or so.
