Olympus Stylus 800 Review

Review Summary
Reader Score: 9.00 (out of 10)
The first of a new generation of affordable 8MP compacts, the Olympus µ Digital 800/Stylus 800 Digital is a well-designed 'weatherproof' model that uses 'Bright Capture' technology to boost sensitivity immensely (up to ISO 2500 in some modes), ensuring a bright screen image and blur-free non-flash photography in very low light. Find out what we thought in our concise review.

With a mixture of good looks, sturdy build quality and everything from numerous scene modes to almost full photographic control, the Olympus Mju Digital 800 offers something to everyone. This is a compact digital camera that will suit both the novice and more experienced photographer alike, as you can take as little or as much control of the camera as you like. The Olympus Mju Digital 800 is pocketable, quick to react, has a great 2.5 inch LCD screen, and is easy to use. It also has an 8 megapixel sensor, perfect for showing off to your friends, but not so good when it comes to the actual image quality.

The Olympus Mju Digital 800 / Stylus 800 (available in white/silver and dark blue) features an Olympus 3x optical zoom lens, an 8 megapixel sensor, a large "HyperCrystal" 2.5" screen, and a weatherproof body. The Olympus also features an "anti-shake" / image stabilisation mode, also called "BrightCapture Technology" - this uses ISO800, ISO1600 and above (upto ISO2500) at 3 megapixels to ensure blur free photos.

I have to admit that I wasn't really excited about the Olympus Stylus 800 when I first took it out of the box. But after using it for a while I kind of grew to like it - well, most of it at least. While I think the 8 Megapixel resolution is going over the top (and the image quality suffers a bit as a result), the Stylus 800 is a competent compact camera that also happens to be weatherproof.

It may be questionable whether anyone really needs an 8MP compact, but there's no denying that the Olympus mju 800 is an extremely good camera. Build quality, ease of use and performance are as good as ever. The Bright Capture technology makes low-light photography much easier, and the image quality in SHQ mode is superb. If you simply must have A3-size holiday snaps then it's ideal.

"The Olympus Stylus 800 (µ DIGITAL 800 in Europe) offers an 8-megapixel resolution, a 3X optical zoom, and a large 2.5-inch high resolution monitor. However these are not the characteristics that distinguish it from the offerings of other manufacturers. What makes the Olympus Stylus 800 special is the fact that it is weather-proof. Each of the covers on its body are fitted with gaskets, as are its external controls, making it possible to use the camera in drizzle, or at the beach without fear that humidity or dust is going to find their way into the camera."

The search for the digital camera Holy Grail goes on. That said the Olympus Stylus 800 is a very good digital 8MP camera that's a major step above the point-and-shoot competition. It should be strongly considered by any outdoorsman or woman who looks forward to a nice hike no matter what the weather and wants to capture raindrops or swirling snowflakes. The camera is super fast and takes excellent photos with vibrant colors. You really don't need much more but we're picky and suggest Olympus makes the next edition even better.

With 8 megapixels, aperture- and shutter-priority exposure controls, and a top-notch built-in help guide, the compact, 3X-zoom Stylus 800 sits solidly at the top of Olympus's weather-resistant-camera lineup. It's also one of the smallest and most affordable 8-megapixel cameras on the market. But if you are opting for a high-resolution model because you have poster-making aspirations, you'll need to save some money and step up to a more advanced 8-megapixel model; the Olympus Stylus 800's photos are generally good enough for 8x10 prints, but we wouldn't suggest blowing them up.

The Olympus Stylus 800, known in Europe as the µ[mju:] Digital 800, comes equipped with an 8.0 megapixel, 1/1.8-inch CCD and Olympus' Bright Capture Technology. A member of the long line of Stylus cameras, first introduced to film-based point-and-shooters in 1982, the camera is built for the automatically-reliant crowd with 22 automatic shooting modes. But it also includes several manual controls and a fast burst mode, which should broaden its appeal to more advanced users. Like the rest of Olympus' Stylus line, the Stylus 800 is weatherproofed with rubber seals within its body. This enables the camera to endure raindrops and splashes, but it certainly can't be taken swimming.

The stylish little Stylus 800 does everything very well, but it doesn't do anything exceptionally well. Image quality, operational speed, and usability are all about average, but that's not a bad thing - average is actually pretty good these days. Still not convinced? The Stylus 800 is built like a tank, it's weatherproof, it's compact and lightweight, and it makes an excellent "take it along everywhere" photographic tool for family shooters, active folks, outdoorsmen (and women), and travelers.

Imaging-Resource ----- 10-28-05 Read Full Review
The Olympus Stylus 800 is the latest in the compact Stylus line of digital cameras from that company. Featuring an 8.0-megapixel CCD, 3x lens, "all-weather" body design, and relatively compact size, the Olympus Stylus 800 Digital is reminiscent of the previous Stylus 500 model, with an automatic sliding lens cover and large, 2.5-inch LCD monitor for image composition (but no optical viewfinder). Like other Stylus Digital models, the camera can operate with very little user intervention by default - but the Olympus Stylus 800 adds Aperture- and Shutter-priority modes for a little extra creative control. There's also the benefit of 19 preset Scene modes and a QuickTime Movie mode (with sound). The all-weather body can withstand water spray from any direction, but isn't meant to be fully submerged in water. Still, rubber seals and a separate plastic chassis inside the metal body provide excellent protection against water splashes and rain.

PC Magazine ----- 10-29-05 Read Full Review
With all the storms that have battered the U.S. in the past few months, perhaps Olympus has the right idea in giving the Stylus 800 an all-weather finish. You won't be able to take the camera underwater (use the Pentax OptioWP for that), but its water-resistant finish will withstand drizzle or light rain. Unfortunately, despite having a good price ($399.95 list) for an 8-megapixel camera, excellent on-screen help, an all-weather finish, and other cool features, the Stylus 800's picture quality keeps it from being a real compact contender.
