Pentax Optio S55 Review

Review Summary
There is a lot to like about the Pentax Option S55. It has a stylish design, takes excellent photos outdoors and is easy to use too. There are a couple of downsides that cannot be dismissed easily though. These are the problems it has focusing in lowlight and long shutter lag times. There are not many stylish five megapixel cameras to choose from and the Optio S55 is one of the cheapest models you will find in this category.

| "The Pentax Optio S55 goes beyond most ultra-compact cameras in its ability to be taken everywhere. The S55's 1.1" thick metallic body easily fits in a shirt pocket and is sturdy enough to endure being carried constantly. However, the most impressive is its good battery life using 2 AA batteries (230 shots based on CIPA standard). Indeed, AA batteries are the most practical for taking digital cameras anywhere because they are widely available, inexpensive, replaceable by disposable and rechargeable via solar power (solar battery charger required).
The Pentax Option S55 is a good ultra-compact camera that improves well on its predecessors. The S55 produces better pictures than most ultra-compact cameras with great color, excellent contrast, good sharpness, low noise and low chromatic aberrations. Users of this camera will be amazed of the amount of useful features packed into this camera including a customizable interface, a live histogram, image parameters adjustment, manual focus, custom white balance, panorama-assist mode and voice-recording."

| In the compact Optio S55, Pentax has included a 1/2.5-inch 5.36 total megapixel CCD and 3x optical zoom lens, equivalent to 35.6 - 107mm in 35mm format. Available online for as low as $212 (USD), the Optio S55 offers point-and-shoot consumers an economic, fairly nondescript alternative with some advanced features and some strong limitations. The camera is packaged in a stylized silver body and designed for ease of use. Marketed as a digital camera with "no experience required," Pentax has applied a large 2.5-inch LCD with a magnified-text setting for increasing visibility of on-screen menus and a "Help" function in the "Auto-select" mode to help guide less knowledgeable users through the photographic process. |

| As a budget compact, the Optio S55 has a lot going for it, but unfortunately it is let down by image noise problems and a very confusing list of modes and options. It is rugged and well made though, so you could do worse for your winter holidays. |
