The Epson Perfection 4990 Photo ($450 street) is one of the most photocentric flatbeds we've seen. This makes sense for a scanner aimed at photo enthusiasts. Among its strengths are high quality photo scans; the ability to scan film in 35mm, 120, 220, 2.25-inch, 6 by 12 cm, and 4- by 5-inch formats; and a claimed resolution suitable for film, at 4800 pixels per inch (ppi) optical by 9600 ppi mechanical. On the negative side, the bundled programs include little for anything but photos and film.

| Although the previous Perfection 4870 PRO was no slouch and provided satisfying performance overall, the 4990 eliminates several shortcomings of all recent Perfection model scanners. The most profound is that with the 4990 the film scan area has been increased to include most of the 8.5x11" scan area, sufficient to scan 8x10" film. This is an obvious utilitarian factor, but most important (because not many photographers have 8x10 film to scan), you can now scan an entire roll of 35mm or 120 film to create a "contact" proof sheet. |

| The Epson Perfection 4990 follows in its predecessors footsteps by offering a higher resolution of 4800dpi, and has also raised the Dmax factor to 4.0, The scanner includes, multi format film scanning, DIGITAL ICE for both film and print scanning. The 4990 scanner is supplied complete with a Transparency Unit and film holders for film formats from 35mm to 5 x 4". Previously flatbed scanner transparency units were sold as an optional extra and could often cost as much as the scanner. Now we are spoilt and we have come to expect it as a standard fitting. With an optical resolution of 4800 x 9600, the 4990 is one of Epson's most eagerly awaited items. You've waited long enough for this review so lets get on with it! |
