Samsung Digimax i5 Review
|
Review Summary
Samsung's entry into the ultra compact digital camera market is the Digimax i5. The size of a deck of cards, the Digimax i5 packs a 5-megapixel resolution and a 3X optical zoom into a colourful metallic body that can be had in red, black, gray or stainless steel. With few external controls, the Digimax i5 offers a smooth shape that is clearly intended to slide easily into a pocket. When turned off, the lens, flash and AF-assist/self-timer lamp below are all covered by a metallic shutter that slides up to protect them.

| The Digimax i5 ($350) is Samsung's entry into the very crowded ultra thin camera market. The i5 features a 5 Megapixel CCD, 3X optical zoom lens, large 2.5" LCD display, and VGA movie mode. If that sounds like every other cameras in this class, you're right. But the Digimax i5 has a very interested features of its own, and I'll cover those in this review. |

| Announced in May, the Digimax i5 is Samsung's smallest digital camera and is housed in a stylish,
stainless steel body that will be available in silver, black, red, and blue shades. The camera is
about the same width (3.53") and height (2.35") as a credit card and only .68" thick - or should I
say thin. Samsung has definitely designed the camera to be simple to operate by reducing buttons
and confusion on the camera body itself. The clean, simple design will make it very comfortable
for almost anyone to pick up and use. The Digimax i5 features a internal 3x optical zoom, which means that
the lens doesn't extend out like it does on many small cameras. This keeps the camera thin and compact
even during use. Other features include a whopping 50MB of internal memory, full screen video (640x480, 30fps)
mode with sound and zoom capability, and a bright, large 2.5" TFT color display. Does the performance of
the camera match its style? Read the review to find out! |

| There's no doubt that 5-megapixel resolution currently defines the sweet spot of point-and-shoot digital cameras. Samsung's 5-megapixel ultracompact entry, the Digimax i5, offers a competitive snapshot feature set housed in a nondescript but slender metal body. Interesting features, a bright 2.5-inch LCD, and a VGA movie mode, however, don't compensate for listless performance and just so-so image quality. |

| The Samsung Digimax i5 is an attractive camera in a busy field of ultra-compact cameras. The inclusion of 50MB of internal memory is a real plus for this camera as is the excellent 2.5 inch LCD. However, slower than average shutter lag and average image quality need to be weighed against the positives in order for this to be a good choice for you.

| "The Samsung Digimax i5 digital camera is that company's first venture into the world of subcompact digicams, and it's a surprisingly impressive first showing. It will certainly turn more than a few heads with its good looks and small size, and its 2.5-inch color LCD monitor adds to its allure. Though aimed at the point-and-shoot-oriented consumer interested in both style and portability, the i5 does offer a nice selection of features, from the 11 preset Scene modes to the availability of full manual exposure control in its Night mode. ....... We were pleasantly surprised by the print quality from the Samsung i5, the image noise we saw on-screen not being nearly as objectionable in the final prints, and colors appearing true, accurate, and appealing. We had a few quibbles with it, but on the whole, found this to be a very workmanlike subcompact digital camera, and an impressive showing by Samsung in the subcompact arena." |
