Pentax Optio WP Review

Review Summary
The Pentax Optio WP is a true 'point & shoot' digital camera. You can't adjust too much yourself, but most users certainly won't object to that. It is a straightforward digital camera, easy to use and operate. And that is what the user wants. The camera is well organized, even without a manual most users will get the hang of it. Very handy is the extra information that is offered with the icons. The 5 Megapixels and the 3x optical zoom of the Optio WP will satisfy the minimum requirements of most travellers

"The Pentax Optio WP is an ultra-compact digital camera with the ability to be taken underwater and in adverse weather without the need for a bulky external housing. Its waterproof body can be submerged up to 1.5m (5ft) for up to 30 minutes. Thanks to this unique ability, the Optio WP can be taken nearly everywhere. The only limiting factor to its go-anywhere capability is its use of a relatively weak proprietary lithium-ion battery.

Being the only current waterproof ultra-compact camera on the market, the Optio WP does not have any competition. Other than its waterproof body, it seems like a fairly typical ultra-compact camera. This camera does produce images with above average noise and shows below average battery life. On the other hand, it focuses better and is more full-featured than most cameras in its class."

Quite simply the Optio WP is one of only a handful of fully waterproof digital cameras currently on the market. It spares you the added expense of a separate waterproof housing and in terms of image quality it gives many "normal" compacts a run for their money, while blowing disposable underwater cameras clean out of the water. There are several niggles, but these are off-set by its 'go anywhere' practicality.

The new WP's pretty, compact, deign makes it a camera designed to live in a handbag, engineered to operated underwater and contains enough digital wizardry to challenge the most creative of minds, but does it take good pictures? Our man Charlie Brewer puts it to the test.

Pentax's Optio WP's sturdy plastic body and waterproof seals give peace of mind when travelling, letting users take the camera along regardless of weather or your planned activities. Its fully automatic exposure control performs reasonably well in a wide variety of conditions, although the camera does tend to underexpose significantly. For more difficult shooting conditions, an unusually wide range of preset "Scene" modes extend the camera's capabilities nicely, so long as you manage to find those hidden by an occasionally obtuse interface.

The amphibious Pentax OptioWP, released this year on January 4th at the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, adds to the Pentax line of small digital cameras for the point-and-shoot user. The major marketing point for the OptioWP is its waterproof abilities - capable of shooting in up to five feet of water. An optional waterproof case may be purchased as well to increase maximum submersion depth and length of time available for shooting. As for more traditional specs, the Pentax OptioWP has a 1/2.5 inch 5 MP CCD, 3x optical zoom lens, and can shoot in both still and movie formats, with synchro or autonomous monaural audio recording.

The Pentax Optio WP is a waterproof digital camera. It is waterproof to a depth of 1.5m for half an hour. Therefore you can take this camera to the beach with you and even into the sea and you should not have a problem with it. In terms of general specification the Optio WP is a five megapixel camera with a three times optical zoom lens.

Whether the Pentax Optio WP is the right camera for you depends on what you are looking for in a digital camera. This camera is waterproof and you can use it on the beach and around the pool without a problem. Picture quality is not as good as you are likely to find with more standard cameras, but you can have a lot of fun with this camera without worrying about it getting wet.

Waterproof to a depth of five feet, this compact, 5-megapixel point-and-shoot camera is ideal for snorkeling, poolside parties, boating, and other water-related activities. A few performance issues aside, the slim Pentax Optio WP delivers plenty of user-friendly features and image quality that will satisfy most snapshot photographers.

Underwater real-world results were surprisingly good, with red and orange showing up very well in a generally blue or blue-green atmosphere. The dynamic range was limited, but that's what you'd expect in a swimming pool. Resolution averaged 1,200 lines, low for a 5MP camera. We noted some pincushioning at full telephoto, possibly caused by additional lens coatings that may contribute to this slight aberration. The OptioWP was slow to boot up, taking 4.1 seconds, but its 2.5-second recycle time was reasonable, if not exceptional.
