HP Photosmart R817 Review
|
Review Summary
The R817 is a more adaptive camera. It boasts a better lens and increased optical zoom, increasing its clarity. By playing with the picture and exposure modes and the various imaging technologies, a large array of combinations give you the ability to take stunning pictures every time. Selecting the right combination can take a while for beginners but the results are well worth the effort. The super macro setting allows you to focus on extremely close objects. The Panoramic setting allows you to take up to 5 images and paste them together into one image; this can also be done post-capture on the camera.

| The R817 is chock full of features for both beginners and enthusiasts. Those just starting out with digital cameras will enjoy the numerous scene modes, easy-to-use menu systems, and in-camera help system. More experienced users will like the manual controls and responsiveness of the camera. The camera has all the major controls including focus, shutter speed, aperture, and white balance. Camera performance is very good, save for a tiny bit of shutter lag at slower shutter speeds. The camera focuses quickly and accurately, even in low light. |

| Hands-on preview: HP Photosmart R817 og R818 are two variables of the same camera. The only difference is the exteriour colour and the packaging. The model is small and handy with 5 megapixel resolution and av 5x Pentax zoom lens, covering focal lengths equivalent to 36-180 mm f/2.8-4.7.
R817/R818 is a brand new camera, slightly smaller than the R717, and slightly bigger than the M-series. Compared with the R717, not only is the zoom range expanded from 3x to 5x, but the optical quality also seems to be better, although this needs to be confirmed by a bench test. An 8x digital zoom is also built-in, gradually cropping the original image.

In steps the R817, a small compact camera that tries it's hardest to stand alongside the Canons and Nikons of this world. The body and design, while reduced considerably since the last outing in the R707, is still a tiny bit chunky and clunky. Thumb groves have been carved out of the design making it comfortable to hold, but for some reason we could never get past the image of a clay model still sitting in the studio waiting for approval. That's not to say its bad. It's just not spectacular. |

| Affordable compact digital cameras typically have 3X optical zoom, which is fine for most situations. But when you want to get close to the action on the soccer field or at the recital, 3X won't always suffice. So we were excited to see that the HP Photosmart R817 has 5X optical zoom-and at a reasonable price. Although our initial enthusiasm was dampened a bit by the R817's relatively slow speeds and significant shutter lag, we still think it's the best 5-megapixel compact camera for beginners. |

| The HP Photosmart R817 will satisfy families looking for an easy-to-use point and shoot digital camera. With each iteration of HP's camera line the specifications improve and the user interface simplifies. This digital camera sports a 5 megapixel CCD, a 5x optical Pentax zoom lens, a large 2" LCD. The only downside is the usual (unfortunately) softness and noise present in images when zoomed. For the 4x6 printing crowd, the R817 will fit in a pocket of purse, zoom in on details, and never confuse the least competent photo taker. |

| The Hewlett-Packard Photosmart R817 continues the look of other R-series cameras, offering a distinctively elegant and modern look. The R817's body is made of a tough black plastic, which is metal-clad on the front and back and around the lens barrel.
This is a compact camera but it still packs a 5X optical zoom manufactured by Pentax, a 5.1 megapixel resolution, and a 2-inch LCD monitor. |

| The HP Photosmart R817 seems to have everything going for it. Small, compact and very stylish body, lots of innovative features like Adaptive Lighting that really make a difference, full manual controls and a 5x optical zoom lens that sets it apart from the competition. |
