Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T5 Review

The Cyber-shot DSC-T5 ($349) is the latest addition to Sony's line of ultra thin cameras. The T5 takes styling cues from the original DSC-T1 (and the more recent DSC-T7 as well), with its unique slide-down lens cover. Other features on the T5 are typical of what you'll find in this class: the 5 Megapixel CCD, 2.5" LCD, point-and-shoot operation, and VGA movie mode. | Sony cameras offer excellent features and performance, good build quality and great picture quality. Sony currently offers no fewer than five distinct lines of cameras, spanning an incredible range of features, price, and performance. In their "Compact" line, they've now added a new five-megapixel model that builds on the success of the preceding T1 model. With a 3x optical zoom lens, compact design, and very generous 2.5-inch LCD screen, the new DSC-T5 is about the thickness of a ladies' compact and very pocket friendly. Automatic exposure control offers point-an-shoot ease, with a handful of scene modes for more difficult shooting situations. |

| The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T5 makes good on Sony's promise to release digital cameras with big LCDs, mega resolution, and internal memory. The T5's 2.5-inch LCD screen includes 230,000 pixels, which is almost twice what the competition is offering on their screens. The T5 has 5.1 megapixels of shooting power and 32 MB of internal memory in which to save those shots. |

| "Considering the large number of 5-megapixel cameras that are on the market, it's unfortunate that the Sony Cyber Shot DSC-T5 didn't bring with it better image quality. At its best, the T5 will make good snapshot prints. At its worst, you'll find limited dynamic range with clipped highlights, blocked shadows, and less than razor-sharp clarity. Details weren't as evident as we had hoped, and it's best to set the ISO manually to a lower number; otherwise you're likely to see some very noticeable visual noise in your shots." |

| "At 15.3mm thin, ultra-compacts don't come much thinner than the Sony Cyber-shot DSC T5 a supremely pocketable 5.1 megapixel digital camera that will really turn heads towards the lens."

| "Last year, Sony made a splash setting the big-LCD trend with the sleek and snappy DSC-T1. Without an optical viewfinder, this style of camera-small enough to fit into a sports jacket or purse and chic enough to dispel the snapshooting geek image-has become a must-have for those whose idea of a party goes beyond blowing out the candles." |

| "The DSC-T5 is the latest in Sony's line of ultra-slim snapshot cameras, and has a broadly similar specification to the other cameras in the T series, such as the T7, T33, T3 and others, since all of them have a 5MP sensor and 3x optical zoom lens. It is certainly an attractively designed camera, and at just 20.3mm thick and 139g including battery and card it is one of the skinniest and lightest cameras on the market.
Ultra-slim design and a good array of options cannot compensate for very low picture quality. Image noise, over-processing, lens distortion and purple fringing all conspire to ruin what could have been a nice little snapshot camera. Add in questionable handling and some flimsy components and it's game over for the DSC-T5." |
