JVC Everio GZ-MC500 Review
|
Review Summary
Reader Score: 7.67 (out of 10)
This is a mini-review of the JVC-MC500, a 3-CCD camcorder that weighs just 400gms (under 1lb), and which fits in the palm of one hand. While there are other tiny camcorders on the market, what makes this model unique is that instead of recording to Mini DV tape, it records to a Compact Flash card, a provided 4GB Microdrive. It records in MPEG-2, which is the format used for DVD video disks, HDV video, and satellite broadcast television.

| A wolf in sheep's clothing, the JVC Everio GZ-MC500E brims with professional features in a compact and innovative design. Its still imaging capabilities are somewhat overrated with regard to resolution, but results are nevertheless excellent - as is also the case with video and audio. A molasses-like start-up time puts a serious dampener on those in want of a capture-the-moment camcorder, but the GZ-MC500E still comes recommended for those who want a powerful tool that can either take the work out of shooting or put full control in the hands of its user. |

| The JVC Everio GZ-MC500 is unlike any camcorder we've reviewed yet. It doesn't record to tape or even to a DVD. The MC500 instead records to a 4GB Microdrive, which is a mini hard disk drive originally designed by IBM (now Hitachi). Movies are saved in MPEG-2 format and you can store a full hour of high quality video on the disk. When you want to delete video you can do it right on the camcorder, without needing to buy another tape or DVD. |
