Olympus C-5500 Sport Zoom Review
|
Review Summary
Reader Score: 7.41 (out of 10)
The Olympus C-5500 is among the latest models in Olympus' C-series line of digital cameras, and offers a versatile combination of image quality and feature set at a relatively low price. Based around a 5.1 megapixel CCD imager and 5x optical zoom lens, the Olympus 5500 also includes some relatively unusual features that help to differentiate it from the competition, such as a "Direct" histogram option, which displays the white and black areas of the frame in red and blue respectively, showing you directly which parts of the image may be under or overexposed. It also sports an impressive "Super Macro" mode that gets incredibly close to your subjects, and does better than most competing models at high ISO settings, perhaps the source of the "Sports" reference in its marketing materials. With a good range of manual controls, the Olympus 5500 is an excellent all-around point & shoot model that should appeal to novice users and more experienced shooters alike. | The Olympus C-5500 Sport Zoom is, above all, a good compact camera for the money. Its 5-megapixel resolution, 5X optical zoom, solid build, impressive array of features, and very good image quality add up to a strong all-purpose option for the advanced snapshot photographer. That said, some of its features are compromised; for example, you can't shoot in burst mode at the highest-quality JPEG setting. That drawback, in addition to some inconsistent shutter lag and focus-time performance, makes this camera less suited for shooting action than the Sport Zoom moniker might lead you to believe. |

| The Olympus C-5500 Sport Zoom ($350) is a midsized 5 Megapixel that offers more zoom than your typical digital camera. Where most cameras in this class have 3X or 4X zooms, the C-5500 has a 5X zoom lens extending from 38 - 190 mm. Other features include a 2-inch LCD display, manual controls, AF-assist lamp, in-camera redeye reduction, and an anti-shake function for recording movies. How did the C-5500 perform in our tests? | Given the price, the Olympus C-5500 is a decent buy. In general, we like the clean images and the 5X zoom. If you compare the images side by side with those taken by the Coolpix 4800, though, you'll notice that the colors just don't pop as much, with duller whites and an overall lack of brightness. Because the two cameras have the same price - and the Coolpix 4800 has a longer optical zoom - this round has to go to Nikon.

| The Olympus C-5500 made its way to shelves in February, following its unveiling the previous month at the extravagant Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. The C-5500 is quite versatile for its $349.99 price tag. It packs 5.1 effective megapixels on its 1/1.8-inch type CCD and pairs it with a TruePic Turbo Image Processor. 15 scene modes are on hand to augment the selection of automatic and manual modes. This Camedia contains a 5x optical zoom lens, which is a welcome step up from the industry rut of 3x optical zoom. The longer zoom is nicely complemented with an image stabilization system, making for smoother QVGA-quality movie recordings. A 2-inch LCD screen with live histogram display rounds out the gamut of options offered by the Olympus Camedia C-5500 digital camera. |
