Kodak DCS Pro SLR/c Review

Throughout Phil's review, comparisons to the SLR/c have been with the Canon EOS-1Ds, the only camera with anywhere near the resolution and the only other camera with a full 35 mm size sensor. There is however an important difference between the SLR/c and EOS-1Ds, price, the SLR/c is some $3000 cheaper than the EOS-1Ds and while they're not really in the same league from a performance and build quality point of view if all you want is resolution you'd be foolish not to at least consider the SLR/c.

| Products such as the Canon EOS 300D or the Nikon D70 have made digital SLR cameras accessible to the general public. Meanwhile, offerings for the professional market are limited. For example, there is not much beyond the Contax N Digital and the Canon EOS 1Ds in the pro sector. However, now that it's technically possible to produce DSLRs that are no more bulky than traditional film SLRs, Kodak has come to the fore with its 14-million pixel monster, available in two models - the SLR/c (Canon mount) and SLR/n (Nikon mount). |

| In February of this year, Kodak released the first model of an upgraded new digital SLR system--a brace of cameras incorporating a newly designed 14-megapixel CMOS sensor--the Kodak Professional CDS Pro SLR/n. The camera is based around a Nikon-built body and has the ability to use Nikon lenses and accessories. The following month Kodak followed up with the second of its new systems, the SLR/c, which uses a Canon lens-mount-based body. (Before release, Kodak indicated that the body was not built by Canon and that its introduction of the system would come as a surprise to the company).

| For the last 15 years Kodak has been a leader in the digital SLR race, with most of its top models produced in partnership with Nikon. But what if you're a Canon shooter with an arsenal of EF lenses who wants the outstanding image quality of the 13.5MP Kodak DCS Pro SLR/n (reviewed April 2004) but doesn't want to spend eight grand for the 11MP Canon EOS-1Ds? Now there's an alternative - Kodak's new 13.5MP DCS Pro SLR/c ($4,500 street). |
