Sony Cyber-shot DSC-S60 Review

Review Summary
Reader Score: 7.05 (out of 10)
The Sony Cybershot DSC-S60 / S80 is a good all-round 4 megapixel digital camera, with a very good movie mode, and very good battery life. Image quality is good, and the camera offers some manual controls, but unfortunately lacks custom white balance and manual focus. The camera is on the expensive side, especially if you take into consideration the high cost of Sony Memory Sticks. The Sony Cybershot S60 is a good all round camera, and if you don't mind the price, then I would recommend this camera.

Sony's Cyber-shot DSC-S60 is one of the latest in the long and broad line of digital cameras that reflects Sony's commanding position in the digital camera marketplace. Like members of the slightly more upscale "W" series, the Sony S60 has a more rangefinder-style than past Cyber-shots, with a compact size for easy travel. In addition to the range of preset scene shooting modes, 3x zoom lens, and a Manual exposure mode, the camera also offers a generous 2.0-inch color LCD monitor. A 4.1-megapixel CCD captures high-resolution images, and 32 megabytes of internal memory lets you capture a handful of images without a memory card. Small-but-not-tiny, full-featured digital cameras seem to be a particularly popular category with Imaging Resource readers, and the Sony S60 fits squarely in that "sweet spot" of the market. Small and solidly built, the Sony S60 stops short of being too small for people with larger hands and fingers. All in all, a nice little package of photo capability, in a just-right-sized case. The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-S60 is a lightweight, reasonably priced compact camera that will serve beginners well. It's a little on the large side, but the DSC-S60 produces quality still shots that make it a good entry-level compact camera. The 4.1-megapixel DSC-S60 has a Carl Zeiss Vario Tessar lens with a 3X optical, 6- to 18-mm zoom (a 35-mm equivalent of 39- to 117-mm) and a maximum f-stop range of f/2.8 to f/5.2 across the zoom range. Its 2-inch LCD is a bit on the small side, but not terribly so for a camera at this price.
