Canon Powershot SD200 Review

The Canon Digital IXUS 30 is a very compact 3 megapixel digital camera, with a 3x optical zoom lens, and a 2" screen. The IXUS 30 offers very speedy performance, good image quality, excellent video modes, and a very good macro mode. The camera is excellent value for money for an ultra compact camera and should consistantly produce good results. The camera's only weaknesses are: a weak flash, some purple fringing, slightly soft images, and lack of more advanced controls.

| The Canon Powershot SD200 is the entry-level model in Canon's latest line of ultra-compact digital cameras. Together with the SD300, SD400 and SD500 (although the last is a tad larger than the other three), they represent the new generation of Powershot cameras that are characterized by a thin profile, the inclusion of the second generation DIGIC processor, and the capability of capturing video with high enough quality for inclusion into homemade DVD discs. Although the SD200 if the least expensive of the group, it still shares many of the features of its higher-megapixel siblings and sports a 3.2 megapixel sensor, with enough resolution to make fine 8" x 10" prints. |

| The Canon PowerShot SD200 Digital ELPH swept onto the scene just in time for the 2004 Holiday season along with its "big brother," the SD300. Together they replace the SD110 in Canon's popular, diminutive digital camera line. In both the film and digital worlds, the tiny, high-style Canon ELPH models have been wildly popular. Long a popular brand for APS film cameras, the Canon Digital ELPHs brought the compact size and styling to the digital world, beginning with the original PowerShot S100. The new Canon SD200 continues the use of the SD memory card format we first saw in the original SD100, and expands the lines excellent printer compatibility with full support of the PictBridge standard. The Canon SD200 and SD300 also update the line with new styling, slimmer profile, a range of resolutions, a big 2 inch LCD, and use of the (very fast) DiGIC II processor. | Considering the 5-megapixel Canon PowerShot SD20 Digital Elph (available in silver, garnet, midnight blue, or gray) takes up less space than a pack of cigarettes, the trade-offs aren't particularly surprising. But many photographers may find a few of them to be deal breakers. |

| You don't buy an SD200 (or SD300/400) for advanced photography. You can get cameras with more capability (aperture priority, shutter priority and manual exposure for example) for the same price or maybe less (e.g. Powershot A510 or Powershot A520, or ..Powershot A610). However they are larger and the major reason you'd buy an SD200 is because it's small. Despite the lack of full manual control, I still like the SD200. In fact I bought one myself so I'd have a camera that I can basically take anywhere! Image quality is good and you do have manual control over almost everything except for exposure (and even there you do have exposure compensation). |

| The PowerShot SD200 Digital ELPH ($300) is a totally new design in Canon's line of compact point-and-shoot cameras. The SD200 takes everything that made the S410 great and makes it smaller -- except for the LCD, which got a lot bigger. Other features on the SD200 include a 3.2 Megapixel CCD, great VGA movie mode, an AF-assist lamp, and a couple of manual of controls. For those who want more resolution, Canon also offers the 4 Megapixel PowerShot SD300. |
