The Nikon Coolpix 5600 is the latest in a long line of Coolpix digital cameras whose popularity stretches back to the original Coolpix 900, Nikon's first "breakthrough" digicam. From a feature standpoint, the Nikon Coolpix 5600 is similar to previous models such as the Coolpix 5200, with all automatic controls and an extremely small form factor. The 5600's 5.1 megapixel CCD captures high-resolution images, with a 3x optical zoom lens and wide range of preset Scene modes and unique "framing assist" options. The Nikon 5600 is super compact, very light weight, and is perfectly suited for shirt pockets. And with its excellent range of user-friendly, almost fail-proof point & shoot exposure modes, the Nikon 5600 can handle just about any shooting situation you care to throw at it.

| The Nikon Coolpix 5600's compact form factor harks back to that of the Coolpix 775 (which debuted in 2001), a camera that was quick, light, and fun to use. For Nikon's follow-up, integrating two out of three of these qualities isn't bad, but it isn't so good, either. The 5600 is light and fun to use, but we take issue with its speed-specifically recycle time. That's a shame, because the 5600 (as well as the related 4MP Coolpix 4600 and 7MP Coolpix 7600) is nicely designed and fairly easy to use, and it gives users 16 accurate and versatile scene modes from which to choose.

| Both novice and experienced digital photographers will appreciate the Coolpix 5600's intuitive controls. Measuring 3.4 by 2.4 by 1.4 inches, the 5600 fits easily in your right hand. Some features, like the scene-mode selection wheel, cater to casual photographers. But even an experienced user will find depth in this camera's features, and Nikon's straightforward user interface puts all of them within easy reach. |

| The Nikon Coolpix 5600 is an attractive, compact, lightweight and affordable digital camera perfect for first-time digital camera users. It is strictly a Point-and-Shoot camera for those who want the camera to take care of exposure for them -- and the camera does this pretty well. Its strong points are good handling, excellent macros, and good quality 5MP images. |

| The recently released Nikon Coolpix 5600 targets users looking for a simple and compact digital camera to assume the brunt of the work. The Coolpix 5600 packs 5.36 total megapixels on its 1/2.5-inch CCD with 5.1 megapixels effective in creating images. Nikon applied a 3x optical zoom lens and 1.8" LCD monitor to the short, silver frame. The 1.8" screen is on the smaller end of cameras released this year and is only composed of 80,000 pixels of resolution. Tagged "Ultra Smart, Simply Digital" by Nikon, the Coolpix 5600 offers point-and-shoot users some shooting flexibility with 16 scene modes, D-Lighting setting, in-Camera Red-Eye Fix, Scene Assistance alternatives and 3 movie modes with sound. The camera includes 14 MB of internal memory and is powered by two AA batteries. Initially retailing for $279.95, intrigued consumers can now purchase the compact Coolpix 5600 for $249.95 following the recent price reduction. |

| The Coolpix 4600 ($200) and 5600 ($280) are Nikon's entry level point-and-shoot cameras for 2005. Both feature compact bodies, a 1.8" LCD display, in-camera redeye reduction and "D-lighting" features (more on these later), and tons of scene modes. The main difference between the two models is the resolution -- 4 Megapixels for the 4600 and 5 for the 5600 -- but there are a few other differences that I'll point out in the review. |

| The Nikon Coolpix 5600 is a true point and shoot model with very few manual control to clutter the small, 85x60x35mm, 130g (without its two AA batteries) camera. It's very easy to use as a result with the on/off and shutter buttons gracing the tiny top plate and a single mode dial on the back offering the cameras (fairly standard) shooting options. A great optical viewfinder sits next to the mode dial, as does the camera's 3x zoom lens control, which drives the optics through their 35-105mm focal range. The lens is however not particularly fast having an f/2.9 to f/4.9 maximum aperture range meaning at full zoom you need to keep the camera very steady as it also has a limited sensitivity range from ISO 50 to 200 controlled automatically. |

| "The 5600 retains a 10x zoom lens offering 38mm to 380mm zoom range, so more than enough to play with, but unlike the 5500, which had a F2.8 optic, the 5600 has a less bright F3.2 maximum aperture, meaning that extra noise reduction processing is called into play sooner than would otherwise be needed. Moreover and ultimately, it is this processing that I believe is creating the odd crowds of artifacts within shadows.
The 5600 provides just enough in terms of new kit and more advanced shooting options to make it a worthy upgrade of the 5500. The EVF is a nightmare, as was macro focusing, but the overall package, with its improved image noise suppressions and manual controls make it worthy of scrutiny if you've got £299.99 to spare on a digital camera." |
