Olympus C7070 Wide Zoom Review

Review Summary
Reader Score: 6.85 (out of 10)
Housed within a distinctively professional-looking rugged magnesium black body, the Olympus Camedia C-7070 Wide Zoom is choke-full of features and yet can be point-and-shoot easy to use in Auto and Programmed Auto modes. Featuring 7.1 megapixel resolution, an excellent wide-angle coverage (27mm), and a 4x optical zoom, the Olympus C-7070 provides the capability to capture an expansive vista as well as pleasing portraits. A Super Macro mode takes you as close as 3 cm (1 in.) to your subject to explore the world of the small. Image quality is very good, with CA sometimes present in high-contrast shots.

As a camera reviewer I get to see all the latest models usually before they're in the shops, but I only have them for a week or so before they have to go back to the manufacturers. Most of the time this is a perfectly fine arrangement, however once in a while I get a camera that makes such an impression on me I'm reluctant to return it. The Olympus C-7070 is just such a camera. I've only had it two weeks so far, but I have to admit I've completely fallen in love with it. I wonder if the marketing team at Olympus would believe me if I told them I'd lost it?

Jumping from a 5 megapixel to a 7 megapixel, the Olympus Camedia C-7070 Wide Zoom is the next incarnation of the C-5060, a camera that was very well-received at the beginning of 2004. The body design of the C-7070 is identical to the C-5060 and the observations we made in January of 2004 while reviewing that camera are as pertinent for this new version. The C-7070 is a big compact, housed in a high-strength body and featuring a hinged 1.8 inch LCD monitor.

The Olympus C-7070 Wide Zoom ($699) is the 7.1 Megapixel update to the C-5060 Wide Zoom, which was introduced back in 2003. The C-7070 shares many of the features of its predecessor, including a wide-angle 4X zoom lens, two memory card slots, dual focusing system, full manual controls, and a unique LCD display. I considered the C-5060WZ one of my favorite cameras back in its day. How does this latest model perform? Find out now in our review!

The Olympus 7070 doesn?t just blur the line between pro and consumer cameras, it erases it. With a superb 7.1 MP CCD sensor, a 27? 110mm equivalent lens, and a solidly constructed magnesium body, this camera is ready to capture the big picture and bring it back in DCF Exif2.2, RAW, TIFF, or JPEG. Shooting speeds are up to 3.3 fps (RAW) with ISO settings from 50-400. You can stand back and take in the landscape, or go into super-macro mode and get as close as an inch from your subject. The 7070 makes you stop and wonder what defines a professional camera, and it does it for about $699 (street).

Updated 4/27/2005 - The Olympus C-7070 Wide Zoom represents a slightly pared-down version of the previous C-8080 Wide Zoom model, with a slightly smaller zoom range, slightly lower-resolution CCD, and less external control. The C-7070 Wide Zoom features a 4x wide-angle zoom lens reaching to 27mm (among the widest in the consumer digital camera market), a 7.41-megapixel CCD, an update to the C-8080's improved user interface, and the same phase-detection autofocus system using an external phase-detect sensor for faster autofocus performance. Pair these features with excellent exposure, color, creative control, and a return to an optical viewfinder, and the Olympus 7070 a very capable camera for just about any shooting situation. An optional underwater housing is also available for the Olympus 7070, for use with the camera's two preset underwater Scene modes, so it can literally go just about anywhere.

First Impression PREVIEW: The introduction of the C-7070 Wide Zoom brings added wide angle capabilities to Olympus’ versatile C-series of digital cameras. Carrying-over a successful blend of consumer design and prosumer features, the C-7070 enables engaged point-and-shooters to grow and seasoned photographers to flourish. Utilizing a 7.1 megapixel, 1/1.8 type (.55 type) CCD sensor, the C-7070 Wide Zoom contains ample resolution for cropping and enlarging images. The applied TruePic TURBO image processor works to ensure crisp, sharp images are recorded with minimal noise and increased speed. The camera is packaged with an all-glass, 27mm-110mm (equivalent) wide zoom lens, catering to the previously neglected group of digital wide angle enthusiasts. The included 4x optical zoom lens opens to an f/2.8-f/11 aperture range, making the camera ideal for deep focus shots with increased depth-of-field.

The Olympus Camedia C7070 Wide Zoom definitely has professional ambitions. It features a sturdy and beautiful housing, a unique dual auto focus system and more than sufficient settings to meet the requirements of the demanding photographer. The resolution of 7.1 Megapixels delivers excellent A3+ prints. A high quality lens, a high bright and a nice zoom range add to the camera's possibilities and versatility. This means that already on paper the Olympus Camedia C7070 Wide Zoom performs greatly.

The C-7070 offers the enthusiast some pro features, including the ability to capture RAW and TIFF images and three types of slow-sync flash settings that ensure that both your subject and background are properly exposed. Many enthusiast cameras have front and rear-curtain slow-sync, but the C-7070 adds a much appreciated red-eye reduction slow-sync as well. The cam-era also offers two underwater modes (both requiring a separate underwater housing), slots for both CompactFlash and xD-Picture Card media, and several histogram settings that advanced shooters will enjoy.
