Kodak EasyShare Z740 Review

Review Summary
Reader Score: 7.50 (out of 10)
In an effort to decrease the presence of the PC in consumer-level digital imaging, Kodak has been concentrating on developing digital cameras that specialize in ease of use, direct connection to printers, and photo sharing. The company's latest superzoom, the 5-megapixel Kodak EasyShare Z740, has plenty of consumer-oriented features and controls, but Kodak seems to have skimped a bit on the most important aspect of a camera: image quality.

The Kodak EasyShare Z740 is a midrange ultra zoom camera that fits between the Z700 and the Z7590 (which is remarkably similar to the DX7590 from 2004). It features a 5 Megapixel CCD, 10X zoom lens, 1.8" LCD display, manual controls, and an AF-assist lamp. You can buy the camera alone ($379) or as part of a "Digital Photo Solution" ($479) which includes Kodak's Printer Dock 3. I reviewed the latter, so you can expect a few comments about the printer along the way. Get ready to learn about the Z740 - and it's bundled printer - our review starts now!

After using the Kodak EasyShare Printer Dock Series 3 it's easy to understand why the company has sold over 2 million docks of various stripes the past few years. It's an effortless solution for quick 4x6 prints that you'd love to pass around. And the Z740 that's bundled with it is a very good 5MP digicam with a 10x optical zoom. Although it has its limitations, I heartily recommend this Instant Dark Room for casual picture takers.

The ease of use is the primary draw for this camera. For those who want to make superb, durable prints quickly at home (or on vacation) without the hassle of computers and software, the Kodak EasyShare Z740 is a perfect choice. The camera is no slouch in the features area either. It has tons of scene modes that are actually easy to understand, a great zoom to pull distant subjects in close, and battery life to last all day.

The Kodak EasyShare Z740 is the latest in a long line of Kodak digital cameras bearing the EasyShare name. EasyShare cameras generally live up to their name quite well, being easy to use, with the accompanying software doing a good job of facilitating sharing through a variety of media. The Kodak Z740 is no exception, providing true point & shoot operation with accurate exposure, a very flexible automatic white balance system, and the bright, highly-saturated color that seems to be preferred by most US consumers.

Photographers can rarely resist the lure of a long zoom lens, and the Kodak EasyShare Z740 Zoom elegantly answers this need with a 10x optical zoom in a user-friendly digital camera. In fact, it is currently bundled with the Printer Dock Series 3 for One-Touch image transfer to your PC and One-Touch printing. It's a perfect combination for families looking for the famed Kodak "Press the button and the camera/printer will do the rest" ease of use promise. If you like well-exposed, vivid, sharpened and beautiful images straight out of the camera, read on.

The Kodak EasyShare Z740 and Z700 are the founding members of Kodak’s new Z-line of digital cameras, unveiled at the 2005 Consumer Electronics Show. The Z-line, situated between the previous CX and current DX lines, is another series in the “ultra zoom” segment. The EasyShare Z740 hosts a 5 MP CCD with a 10x optical all-glass lens, which offers a 38-380mm (equivalent) zoom range. The Z740 is designed to appeal to the slightly more advanced point-and-shooter, with its intuitive interface, available accessory lens and advanced telephoto range, along with a generous range of manual control and preset options, without sacrificing ease of use and handy direct printing.

Kodak may not be the first company to pair a digital camera with a printer, but it certainly is trying to push home the idea that we should print out our photos, put them in a box and keep them in the loft for a rainy day rather than trust non-paper formats for all time after all they haven't had two centuries of testing.

The Easyshare Z740 is one of three new big zoom digital cameras introduced at the beginning of the year. It provides ten times optical zoom, a five megapixel sensor and a range of manual control. From a price point of view the Z740 slots in at the more 'affordable' end of the increasingly crowded compact super zoom digital camera sector. Read our review to see how the Z740 performed and how it compared.

Kodak has just refreshed its complete line-up of digital cameras and the EasyShare Z740 is one of them. The Z740 features a 10X optical zoom and a 5-megapixel resolution, and a offers a redesigned set of external controls when compared to the DX 7590, the model it replaces. The Z740's body is composed of silver-grey plastic and has a large rubber-covered grip which provides a secure hold on the camera. Only the ring around the lens barrel is metallic.

A 10X zoom lens, manual exposure controls, 5-megapixel resolution, a versatile burst-shooting mode, and an electronic viewfinder that works as well in blazing sunlight as in murky interiors-there are certainly aspects of the Kodak EasyShare Z740 that might cause photo enthusiasts to sit up and take notice. Unfortunately, the downside includes rampant purple fringing, a bit of noise (marring otherwise decent image quality), a lack of manual focus, and a low-resolution EVF, which suffers from ghosting and blackouts between shots.
