Konica Minolta DiMAGE Scan Elite 5400 II Review

Review Summary
Reader Score: 8.54 (out of 10)
In this predominantly digital age a good quality dedicated film scanner is becoming harder to find, especially as many flatbed scanners are now offering similar resolution figures. Many will argue that you can't beat a good quality dedicated film scanner and I wouldn't disagree with that fact either. Minolta are a key player in the film scanner area, their scanners provide excellent value for money and they also do a great job of converting analogue film to digital files. For a photographer who has been shooting film and has now moved over to digital, this scanner may offer the last link between film and digital capture. In this review I will make a point of testing how well the Konica Minolta 5400 II scanner performs against a flatbed scanner with a TPU.

It's hard to beat a box that can quickly (25 seconds) scan 16-bit channels with a dynamic range of 4.8 (implying a higher Dmax, the maximum density it can record) at 5400-dpi resolution (a 42.2-Mp file) with multi-sampling to reduce random noise. We miss the FireWire connection and begin able to create our own profile in the DiMAGE Scan software with an IT8 target.
