Nikon Coolpix 5900 Review
|
Review Summary
Reader Score: 7.56 (out of 10)
With their 2005 Coolpix models, Nikon is going the route of so many other camera manufacturers by building flash memory into the camera instead of including a memory card. In the case of the Coolpix 5900 and 7900, that's just 13.5MB worth. That holds just 4 or 5 photos at the highest quality setting, so you'll definitely want to buy a memory card right away. The cameras use Secure Digital memory cards, and I recommend a 256MB or 512MB card as a good starting point. A high speed SD card is recommended if you plan on using the high quality movie mode.

| The Nikon Coolpix 5900 is a stylishly designed 5 megapixel compact digital camera that was first announced at the PMA show back in February 2005. The Coolpix 5900 is one of the first Nikon digital cameras to feature some new technologies, including Face-Priority AF (Autofocus), which automatically detects a face in an image and focuses on it, D-Lighting, which intelligently lightens overly dark images, and Advanced Red-eye Reduction, which corrects red-eye in most situations. Other standout features on the Nikon Coolpix 5900 include a 2 inch LCD screen, 16 different scene modes to help you take better pictures and a long battery life of approximately 270 images. This is also the first Nikon digital camera that I have reviewed, so did the Coolpix 5900 impress me with both its cutting-edge features and overall design? Carry on reading to find out. |

| A smattering of gee-whiz features lifts this compact point-and-shoot model above the busy crowd of highly automated 5-megapixel pocket cameras. A less expensive stablemate of the 7-megapixel Coolpix 7900, the Nikon Coolpix 5900 shares its sibling's Face-Priority Autofocus, postshot shadow-brightening tool, help features, and blur detection, all of which spice up an otherwise mundane feature set. |

| Preview Only: Several weeks ago at PMA in Orlando, Florida, Nikon announced their new point-and-shoot Coolpix digital camera lineup for 2005. Just below the flagship model of the lineup is the Nikon Coolpix 5900. The only notable difference between the Coolpix 5900 and the slightly more expensive Coolpix 7900 is the reduction in effective megapixels from 7.1 to 5.1. The Nikon Coolpix 5900 has the same hardware with a 1/1.8-inch type CCD, a 3x Zoom-Nikkor ED glass lens with a 38-114mm (35mm equivalent) focal range, along with a 2-inch, 115k LCD screen. The Coolpix 5900 will be available in March 2005 at an MSRP of $349.95 (USD). |
