Canon PIXMA iP5000 Printer Review
Review by Ron Risman - June 2005

4. Black and White Printing

Black & White Printing
When I reviewed the All-In-One PIXMA MP760 in March, I mentioned that the black & white prints looked more gray when compared to true black & white film prints. However, this time, when Canon sent me the iP5000 to review they also sent along a pack of Canon Photo Paper Pro Glossy paper instead of the Semi-Gloss (Canon Photo Paper Plus) paper that they had sent when I reviewed the PIXMA 760. Upon completing my test prints I noticed that the black & white prints from the iP5000 looked much closer to film B&W than the prints that I had made with the PIXMA MP760.

Since both printers use the same ContrastPLUS™ 5-color ink system I decided to reprint the b&w tests on the PIXMA MP760. I quickly discovered that the paper made a big difference when printing in black & white. When using the Canon Photo Paper Plus Semi-Gloss paper, the b&w prints had a more "grayish" tint to them, but when printing the same images on the Canon Photo Paper Pro Glossy Paper they looked like true b&w prints.

Canon's High Gloss Photo Paper Pro paper offers better B&W tones and colors have a bit more "punch" to them. Canon makes this paper in three sizes, although this printer doesn't handle the larger 13" x 19" size:

  • Canon Photo Paper Pro (4" x 6", Borderless, 75 pack) - Check Prices
  • Canon Photo Paper Pro (4" x 6", Borderless, 20 pack) - Check Prices
  • Canon Photo Paper Pro (4" x 6", Perforated, 20 pack) - Check Prices
  • Canon Photo Paper Pro (8.5" x 11", High Gloss, 30 pack) - Check Prices

Canon's Semi-Gloss Photo Paper Plus offers great looking color prints with a more professional lustre finish. Canon also offers this paper available in three sizes:

  • Canon Photo Paper Plus (4" x 6", Semi Gloss, 50 pack) - Check Prices
  • Canon Photo Paper Plus (5" x 7", Semi Gloss, Double Sided, 10 pack) - Check Prices
  • Canon Photo Paper Plus (8.5" x 11", Semi Gloss, Double Sided, 10 pack) - Check Prices
