2. Design and Layout
Design
The design of the PIXMA iP5000 is rather plain and simple. There is only one exposed button (power) on the upper
right corner of the printer and a Canon logo on the front (folding) panel.
The printer features two paper trays; a rear tray and an internal bottom tray. If you only use the bottom paper
input tray and leave the rear tray folded in, the printer will easily slide into a multimedia center or bookshelf,
ready to churn out photographs at the click of a mouse. With the front-accessible controls and USB port, users
can connect their digital camera without having to slide out the printer.
Front Panel
Canon has purposely designed the iP5000 to keep things simple, thus there are very few front panel controls.
With the output paper tray in the closed position, the only button you'll see on the printer is a round
power button with a side lamp that glows green when the printer is on and ready to print.
This lamp also serves to provide error alerts and will blink and change colors depending on the error (paper out, jammed,
ink out, etc.).
When you open the front paper output tray you will find two more buttons and an icon in the shape of the iP5000. This icon
has two green lights that show which paper tray is currently selected. Pressing the "Paper Feed Switch" button allows you
to change paper trays (internal or rear) and will light the appropriate area of the icon (See photo). The top
"Resume/Cancel" button, located directly above the printer-lamp icon, allows you to resume or cancel printing.
Paper and Trays
The iP5000 features a dual paper path, allowing both photo paper and standard inkjet paper to be loaded
and ready to go. The lower internal tray can handle paper sizes up to 8.5" x 11". I recommend keeping
the photo paper in the lower tray since it is enclosed. This will help to keep away dust and dirt that
could scratch the glossy finish of photo paper. The rear paper tray folds out to hold another stack of paper.
Each paper input tray can hold 150 sheets of standard copier or 20 sheets of photo paper.
The output tray can support up to 50 sheets.
Printing Options
Printing to the PIXMA iP5000 can be done from your PC or directly from a PictBridge or Canon
Direct Print compatible camera. A printer-ready USB 2.0 port is located on the back
of the printer for connection to your PC and a front-mounted USB port is available for direct
connection to cameras. The printer is also backwards compatible with USB 1.1 connections.
When printing from a camera, you use the camera's menu to select the print options such as paper size
and type. When printing from your PC, you use the printer driver that is included with the printer
to select the appropriate printer settings.
