Epson Stylus Photo Pro 3800 to Retail for $1295

September 27, 2006 -- Epson today released additional details on their new Epson Stylus Pro 3800 including the selling price, which will be $1,295 or $1,495 for the Professional Edition with Colorburst RIP (Street prices should be lower). The new Epson Stylus Pro 3800 offers 9 color printing without swapping inks. While the unit does feature a large 2.5" LCD on top, it is used for status and ink levels only. It would have been a nice bonus to have integrated media slots with viewing available on the 2.5" LCD.

The new Epson Stylus Pro 3800 boasts some of today's most advanced technologies and will be an ideal printer for fine-art reproductions, color accurate proofs, or for those looking to sell their prints.

Extreme Photographic Image Quality
The new Epson Stylus Pro 3800 uses a newly developed ultramodern screening technology, which uses a new algorithm to determine exact dot placement. This provides for consistently sharp, clear photographic prints. The precision of Epson's print head technology combined with the performance of Epson's Ultra Chrome K3 inks results in your images being masterfully printed without any signs of how they were produced. Now you can produce professional-grade, archival prints with amazing color fidelity, gloss level and scratch resistance.

Outstanding Black and White Prints
The Epson Stylus Pro 3800 allows complete creative control for black-and=-white prints thanks to the new Advanced B&W printing mode within the printer software. This technology takes full advantage of the three-level black ink system to produce neutral and toned B&W prints with uncompromising image quality. This breakthrough also delivers impressive shadow-to-highlight detail for a perfect tonal range and virtually no metamerism or bronzing. The Stylus Pro 3800 also automatically switches between two Black ink modes - Photo Black and Matte Black - to optimize the black density on photographic or fine art papers.

Professional Media Handling
Today's Creative Professionals require the flexibility to print on virtually any type of media, from photographic and fine art papers to everyday, glossy and matte papers. The Epson Stylus Pro 3800 incorporates a high-capacity paper feeder and a variety of different ways to load your media.

  • Front-Loading, straight-through paper path capable of handling media up to 1.5 mm thick.
  • Top-Loading, single-sheet feeder optimized for fine art papers.
  • BorderFree® cut-sheet printing on a variety of media up to 17"x22", including standard photographic sizes from 4"x6" to 16"x20."
Epson Professional Media
  • Premium Glossy Photo Paper
  • Premium Semigloss Photo Paper
  • Premium Luster Photo Paper
  • Proofing Paper Commercial Semimatte
  • Singleweight Matte Paper
  • Photo Quality Ink Jet Paper
  • Enhanced Matte Paper
  • UltraSmooth Fine Art Paper
  • Velvet Fine Art Paper

Prints that Sell
The Epson Stylus Pro 3800 is redefining fine art and photographic printing. It allows you to offer your customers fine art originals, reproductions and photographs that will last for generations. With greater print resolution and amazing color fidelity and gloss level, your prints will satisfy even the most discrimination buyer. Plus, the professional permanence ratings and excellent smudge, scratch and water resistance of Epson prints offer your customers unmatched durability and longevity for their investment.

Easy to Use
The Epson Stylus Pro 3800 offers several user-friendly features. The control panel includes an easy-to-read 2.5" LCD to clearly display the operational status and ink levels. Ink cartridges can be quickly changed, on the fly, during a print job with little downtime. An internal sensor controls the automatic print head alignment and cleaning technologies to ensure consistent print quality. And the built-in, high speed 10/100 Base T Ethernet port conveniently connects the printer directly to your computer or local area network (LAN) for greater productivity. Multiple paper paths offer the flexibility to manually or automatically feed up to 120 sheets of plain paper. And when they're not in use, the paper trays can be closed to save space and showcase the compact design of this high-performance printer that's small enough to fit on your desk.

Official Press Release

LONG BEACH, Calif., Sept. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Epson, the overwhelming brand of choice among professional photographers, continues to advance the possibilities of professional imaging with the introduction of the Epson Stylus(R) Pro 3800. Incorporating a compact, 17-inch wide printer design, a new breakthrough screening algorithm and award-winning Epson UltraChrome K3 Ink(TM) technology, this printer delivers print quality and longevity unsurpassed by any other inkjet printer. For added productivity, a new auto-sharing black ink technology allows for automatic switching between photo and matte black ink modes to maximize image quality on a wide variety of media types. Available for $1,295 (estimated street price), this sleek and sophisticated printer is engineered to mark another turning point in the history of printing technology for professional photography, graphic design and prepress proofing.

"Throughout my career I've constantly pushed the limits of technology in an attempt to reproduce the bold colors that define my work," said Pete Turner, master colorist and photographer whose photographs have appeared on hundreds of ads, magazines, record album covers, and are in the permanent collections of world-class museums. "Epson's new Stylus Pro 3800 represents an amazing breakthrough for creative professionals, providing unprecedented control over the entire printing process without any compromises. Combined with Epson's UltraChrome K3 pigment based ink, my prints have a sense of color and liquidity that I have never been able to get with any previous inkjet printing process."

More About the Epson Stylus Pro 3800
Designed to exceed all expectations in the area of photographic image quality, the Epson Stylus Pro 3800 incorporates several new technologies and performance advancements for the most discerning professionals, which include:

  • New Auto-Sharing Black Ink Technology: Breakthrough print head allows the printer to automatically switch between photo and matte black inks, providing virtually seamless transition times and greater conservation of black inks.
  • Epson UltraChrome K3 Ink Technology: Using only eight individual cartridges at a time, Epson UltraChrome K3 inks incorporate high-density color pigments that produce the highest overall color gamut and fidelity among virtually any pigment-based inkjet printer in the industry. A high-gloss Microcrystal Encapsulation(TM) resin chemistry is also used to create prints with greater scratch resistance and reduced gloss differential.
  • Three-Level Black Ink System: In addition to cyan, magenta, yellow, light cyan, and light magenta, Epson UltraChrome K3 features a unique three-level black ink system that simultaneously uses black, light black and light-light black inks to produce professional quality black-and-white prints that rival traditional silver halide. This technology is designed to create professional neutral and toned black and white prints without color crossover, metamerism or bronzing.
  • New Screening Technology: Debuting a mathematical breakthrough from Epson, the printer features an entirely new, radical screening algorithm that consistently places droplets precisely, producing smoother tonal transitions and greater detail from highlights to shadows.
  • High-Performance Engine Speeds: The extreme precision of the Epson Stylus Pro print engine delivers a 16"x 20" photo lab-quality print (using 1,440 x 720 dpi - High Speed mode) in as fast as five minutes, 32 seconds -- more than 20 percent faster than the Epson Stylus Pro 4800.(1)
  • High-Precision Print Head Technology: The high-performance one-inch wide, eight-channel print head can achieve resolution levels up to 2880 x 1440 dpi with variable-sized ink droplets as small as 3.5 picoliters.
  • Flexible Media Handling: Accommodating a variety of media in cut-sheet form between 4"x6" and 17"x22", including BorderFree(R) printing up to 16"x20", the printer offers three different ways to load media -- a high-capacity paper tray (120 sheets), top-loading manual tray optimized for fine art media and a front-loading, straight-through path capable of handling media up to 1.5 mm thick.
  • Print Longevity: Prints created with the Epson Stylus Pro 3800 are predicted to resist fading up to 108 years for color prints and more than 200 years for black and white prints on specific Epson papers.(2)
  • New Sleek and Compact Design: Weighing in at only 43 pounds, the Epson Stylus Pro 3800 features a new compact design and narrow depth. Compared to the Epson Stylus Pro 4800, the dimensions and weight are reduced by 30 and 51 percent, respectively.
  • Connectivity Flexibility: For added versatility, the Epson Stylus Pro 3800 ships standard with 10/100 BaseT Ethernet and USB 2.0 connectivity.
