Depth of Field Scales Traditionalists bemoan the lack of depth of field (DOF) scales on modern lenses. Ever since zoom lenses came into fashion (I bought my first in 1974) we have seen DOF scales becoming less detailed and less usable until they are now largely vestigial if not extinct. There are a few notable exceptions to this, notably Leica and the other manufacturers of lenses for rangefinder use, where such scales are both more necessary and far more widely understood and used.
