I often hear, "I'm thinking of getting into wedding photography" and "there's a lot of money to be made shooting weddings." These familiar statements are generally made by amateur shooters anxious to climb another rung toward professional status. In this article I will share what I know about the business based on 20 plus years in the field.

Most amateurs tend to gravitate toward either weddings/portraits or travel/scenic photography. My personal choice has been primarily people photography for most of my career. Sure, I've shot other stuff too and even sold an image here and there to magazines and calendars but the bread and butter for me has always been people images. It's a personal trait and if you have it you know it.
