The ISO setting on a digital camera is a measure of its sensor's sensitivity to light. Low values indicate a lesser sensitivity to light, high ISO values indicate a greater sensitivity to light. With all cameras however, an increased sensitivity to light comes at a price, and this is true to a greater or lesser extent with all types of digital cameras, ranging from the least to the most expensive models. As the sensitivity of the sensor augments - a process akin to increasing the volume of a radio - electronic noise starts to appear, the visual equivalent of the sound distortion that can become audible when the radio's volume is turned way up.
