Up Close and Personal: Macro Photography Tips

Published by:  MSN Photos

The term close-up photography generally refers to moderately close focusing, as in a tight head-and-shoulders portrait. But it's possible to get much closer to your subject with special lenses or lens accessories. Such high-magnification photography is usually called macro, and it's great for creative nature photography. Special equipment can help you make a frame-filling image of a tiny subject, such as a butterfly, the interior of a blossom, or a dragonfly.

But macro techniques are just as useful for taking pictures of small objects, such as jewelry, postage stamps, or coins. Many people use macro photography for documenting their possessions for insurance purposes or to illustrate their online auction listings. Regardless of the subject, the equipment and techniques for macro photography are similar. Lenses designed specifically for high-magnification image making can be expensive, but you can also experiment with close-focus accessories on a lens that you already own.
