The Imaging Factory: ConvertToBW Pro 3.0

Published by: Digital Outback Photo       07-26-2005        Read Complete Article
Article Summary

We heard a lot of praise for this B&W conversion filter for the Mac and also used the older versions of this filter. The older filter was a solid performer but we really did not like the small preview as this is not helpful to judge tonality. Now the new filter is also available for Windows.....Read Complete Article

Review of Sizefixer by Fixerlabs
"What is meant by the terms upsizing or interpolation? I am sure there is a formal definition, however in simple words, upsizing or interpolation is the process of taking an image from one size say 12" x 18" at 300 dpi to 17.5" x 26" at 300 dpi. It is also possible to take a 12" x 18" inch image at 300 dpi and only change the dpi to 205 which will ......

See what gear professionals carry with them
Uwe Steinmueller over at Digital Outback Photo has created a page that shows what he carries with him when he goes out into the field to shoot. He covers the case he uses to carry his equipment as well as which camera bodies, lenses, tripods, clamps, etc. I always find articles like this an interesting read. ......

Epson UltraChrome K3 Monochrome Photographic PrintMaking
The razzle-dazzle of the digital photographic era has centered on digital camera technology. But for me, as a fine arts photographer (www.petemyers.com), my concern has always been about printmaking technology-not camera technology. Why?

I define a fine art photographic print as the following: "an image that is printed to exacting standards, ......

Using the Canon EOS-5D and Nikon D2x in the Field
On the net, the discussions [as to] what camera to get are very hot: Nikon vs. Canon or Full Frame (FF) vs. 1.5x crop. The recent introduction of the Canon 5D and the availability of the Nikon D2x fuel these discussions.

We use our cameras as tools and have as much experience with the Canon line as we have used Nikon in the past. This time we......

Liquid Sculpture: High Speed Phtography
High-speed photography of drops and splashes has captivated viewers for a century. Fluids in motion have a simple beauty in their complex dynamics. Images of that motion stopped seem to tap into people's innate child-like sense of wonder, engaging their imagination. I, for one, cannot seem to get enough of it.......

Comparing the Canon 5D, 1D Mark II (N), 1Ds Mark II and Nikon D2x
This article mainly compares the specs collected from the manufacturer but does discuss the Pros and Cons of a full frame sensor. These four cameras that are compared define the current market of 35mm DSLR cameras that feature over 12MP resolution and/or are high speed (up to 8fps).......

Using High-Speed Crop mode on the Nikon D2X
We now got for the first time a D2X for our own review. Before we had only limited access through one of our very helpful readers. On one side we got the D2X late in the game but on the other side it is a perfect timing to compare the D2X to Canon's latest offering the EOS 5D. We will use for the next weeks the Nikon D2X and the Canon EOS 5D side b......

Canon EOS-1D Mark II N First Impressions
We just got in a production sample from the 1D Mk. II N. Overall all the upgrades seem to be minor but of course nice to have.

The 3" LCD allows clearly a better view on images and histogram data. But overall we think that Canon could improve the organization of their histogram views.......

Konica Minolta Maxxum 7D Experience
Read Uwe Steinmuelle's ongoing Konica Minolta Maxxum 7D Experience Report. "We got a sample of the Konica Minolta Maxxum 7D very late. We still wanted to have a look at this camera as it features a unique Anti Shake (AS) sensor. There is also a cheaper 5D planned to be released soon that has some fewer capabilities but uses the same base technology......

Take control of your black & white inkjet printing
Are you satisfied with the quality of your inkjet black and white prints? If your answer is no you came to the right place and help is on its way. What follows may just be what the doctor ordered.

Many photographers who print in black and white are demanding users for whom RIPs and good profiles, even custom profiles, are not enough to satis......

Is this color real? Literal versus Expressive Representations
I am often asked if the color of a specific photograph is real or not. My answer is always the same. Yes, it is real. The reaction from the person asking the question is usually one of disbelief. They beg to differ. To them the color is not real. To me it is real. Who is right?

The answer is we are both right because in the absence of the ac......

"Where are my Photoshop Actions?"
Today our editorial team member Paul Caldwell had to reinstall Photoshop CS (intentionally without keeping his preferences as they seemed to cause some trouble). Once Photoshop was up and running again he missed his many Photoshop actions and asked: "Where are my Photoshop Actions?".......

Is Photoshop CS2 Worth it?
Photoshop CS2 will be the tenth upgrade of Photoshop that I have purchased over the past ten or so years. Earlier releases were uniformly greeted with great enthusiasm (in Photoshop 3.0 - Adobe gave us Layers; in Photoshop 4.0 - they gave us Adjustment Layers; and in Photoshop 5.0 - they provided Color Management). But recent releases have often be......

Comparing Depth of Field (Nikon D2x vs Canon 1Ds MII)
Depth of field is a function of aperture and shooting distance. It is also a function of focal length, but this effect is minimal except when doing close-up work. When depth of field is described, it is in relation to a circle of confusion, the smallest dot that is considered "sharp". A discussion of depth of field or a depth of field table is misl......

Canon EOS 1DS Mark II Experience Report
Often we hear often the question whether the 1Ds Mk. II is good for landscape photos. Of course the answer depends on your standards. If you are used to 8x10" scanned film the answer maybe no. But we were happy using the older 1Ds for landscapes as we think detail is not the only criterion for a landscape shot.......

Color Management for Photographers #006
After I read Uwe's article on using the ProPhoto color space, I realized there may be a few readers who do not understand how rendering intents differ from each other. What follows is not intended to be a full discourse, but rather a brief overview on rendering intents. These explanations should help make it clearer when the use of each is appropri......
