"Most photographs endure. A properly processed black-and-white photograph placed in a file box kept in a cool place ought to endure indefinitely - at least for 600 years. Black-and-white negatives and prints typically delight archivists simply because they exist decade after decade, especially when kept from direct sunlight. If mounted in a photo album made of acid-free paper and kept cool and dry, the photographs last more than a lifetime.

Across the region, historical societies delight in finding glass negatives of town squares, townspeople, factories, horses, schools, and other reminders of the past, often dating to the Civil War.
