"Most photographs endure. A properly processed black-and-white photograph placed in a file box kept in a cool place ought to endure indefinitely - at least for 600 years. Black-and-white negatives and prints typically delight archivists simply because they exist decade after decade, especially when kept from direct sunlight. If mounted in a photo album made of acid-free paper and kept cool and dry, the photographs last more than a lifetime.
Across the region, historical societies delight in finding glass negatives of town squares, townspeople, factories, horses, schools, and other reminders of the past, often dating to the Civil War. Only rarely does anyone ponder the longevity of the negatives that print almost effortlessly onto modern paper.
