Mr. Beck is now deputy director of Aïna, probably the first photo agency in a country where a camera is still a big black box with film in it. Aïna's 10 Afghan photographers have no shortage of subjects to cover, but they do suffer from a shortage of buyers. In a country with an under-developed media-let alone a market for professional photographs-Aïna's survival hinges on its ability to reach people abroad.
