Michael Reichmann Discusses His Personal "Bias

Article Summary

What is it about the tribalism of DSLR ownership that causes some people to get their knickers so twisted? (He asked rhetorically.)

In late September, 2005 I wrote an essay titled Industry Push Pull in which I noodled over the introduction of two new cameras, the Canon 5D and the Sony R1, and the impact that these two products might have on the future of the DSLR marketplace. As part of my speculation I discussed how sensor costs were declining. With the 5D we were now seeing full frame at prices that matched APS sized sensors of just 3 years ago, and with the R1 we were seeing a digicam with an APS sized sensors at under a thousand dollars. Both significant developments. I also repeated my contention, first made some two years ago, that the 4/3 format is "an evolutionary dead end".....Read Complete Article

The Convergence of Still Photography & Video
"I believe that due to a convergence of technologies we are now about to see the creation of a new type of camera that will allow the shooting of very high quality images, which can then be purposed as stills or image sequence (for lack of a better word), or even turned into some new form of hybrid imaging presentation that we haven't yet conceptua......

Nikon D3 and D300: A Biased Evaluation of The Differences
" ... In this essay I look at the new Nikon D3 and D300 though the eyes (mine) of someone who has been shooting with Canon cameras for the past 8 years. Prior to 1999 I used Nikons, shoot film, and used them to make a living in photography for some 30 years. I also used (and still do) Hasselblads and Leicas, and as a magazine reviewer have probably......

New Harman Byrata Paper Review
"For any photographer with traditional darkroom experience the inkjet printing revolution has been both a blessing and a curse. While on the one hand we are now able to produce prints with greater longevity that ever before, with greater dMax than ever before, and with higher colour saturation that ever before, we can't do so all on the same paper ......

Digital Safari Equipment Tips
"An African Safari is an incredible experience that, for many, will be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity both to experience incredible scenery and wildlife and to make some amazing photographs.

I have spent more than three months on safari in Africa over the last several years. I have also traveled to many other photo destinations, includ......

The Amazon – What Worked and What Didn't
"After every major expedition or field shoot I write up a small piece on What Worked, and What Didn't. This includes photographic equipment as well as non-photographic gear, facilities and other arrangements.

My April 2007 Amazon Expedition Workshop saw 16 photographers and spouses spend 11 days on a riverboat on the Amazon and its tribu......

Taking Your Photography To The Next Level
Part One of a Three Part Series
"Photographers go through stages of development, and while we don't all follow the same path, an understanding of our current level of skill, creativity and artistry is, I think, an important exercise. If we know where we are and we have an idea of where we want to be, it becomes a lot easier to......

ColorEyes Display Pro Review
Maintaining color control is crucial for today's photographer and more and more of them are adopting monitor profiling in order to do it. The challenge they're facing, however, is finding profiling software that will work for both new and advanced users. Until now.

Luminous-Landscape takes a look at the new ColorEyes Display Pro and answers t......

Leica M8- Another Perspective
"Rangefinder cameras are a different thing, for the manufacturer (especially in the digital era), the lens designer and the user. Moreover, the Leica M8 has adopted several compromises. They must to be known, understood and accepted. The recompense is an interesting instrument with strong points and limitations. The potential image quality provided......

48 Hours in Color-Management Hell
"The punchline first: Everything's okay. And: "whew."

However, I just got out of about 48 hours in color-management hell. Ever been there? It's not pleasant.

The printer I was using is new to me. It's a B9180 that HP sent to me as a review sample a few days ago. The first prints I made were...well, not prints at all, but embarrassme......

Reflections on Recent Digital Paper Offerings
"It's as if the digital imaging community has developed amnesia. Each new product is being judged only in terms of its immediate predecessor. Yes, Silver Rag looks better that Epson Premium SemiGloss. But have we forgotten what came before the digital avalanche? Look, really look at the tonality, surface and luminance of prints made by Paul Capon......

Quick Review: Panasonic DMC-FZ50 and DMC-LX2
"Panasonic is coming on strong in the digital camera market with quite a number of new camera introductions in Q3, 2006. The L1 DSLR is a brand new offering, while two others which caught my eye are refreshes of previous versions. The FZ50 is an update to the popular FZ-30, while the LX2 is a refresh of the unique LX1.

Since this is simply a ......

Sensor & Sensibility: Understanding Sensor Issues

"Starting with apologies to Jane Austen fans for the title of this article, let me add as well that this is not a treatise on sensor design. Rather, it is simply a primer on some of the basics, intended to help photographers understand what is going on behind the scenes of sensor design and manufacture. ......

Long Exposures Come to Medium Format Digital
"Owners of DSLRs with CMOS sensors may not consider it a big deal, but CCD chips, such as those used in medium format backs, have (until now) had difficulty with long exposures. And by long exposures I'm not talking about minutes. I'm talking about seconds, and in many cases even large fractions of a second.

No, this is not hyperbole, as owne......

Acratech Leveling Base Review
Review: "n photography, and especially with regard to photographic gear, it's sometime the little things that make the biggest difference. Most photographers have come to know the benefits of using ballheads. Several years ago a small company called Acratech introduced a lightweight head that was the antitheses of most available until that time. It......

Advanced Dust Healing Technique
"Dust spots on the sensor are the one of the darkest sides of digital SLRs. We use now for a long time the Healing Brush in PS (since version 7) to remove dust spots pretty fast (we describe the use in our handbook). But spotting the dust spots can be tricky."......

On Safari in South West Africa; What Worked, and What Didn't
"What equipment to bring on a remote shoot is a topic of endless fascination and discussion among photographers. Pros with assistants can afford to bring cases of gear and choose the best possible tool for each particular shot. This is not the case for most everyone else, and so if one has several systems, and a large collection of lenses, the ques......

In Search of Ultimate Image Quality
"This is a description of what some might regard as a fool's task – to put together the highest quality digital image capture system that today's technology provides. The process required making decisions about several major components, including the camera platform, digital back, and the lenses to be used.

Though by no means inexpensive – th......

Tracking the Cost of Printing with an Epson 4800
"Readers of my previous essay will be familiar with the model I developed to track the costs of printing with an Epson 4000. On November 1, 2005 I took delivery of the new Epson 4800 and restarted the same model for tracking the cost of using it. Almost four months later and with about 1,300 "Standard Prints" (SP) - 54 square inches of image on Ep......

Subject Matter & Print Size
"When I was at the Beaux Arts I had a life-changing experience in regards to the relationship between subject matter and print size. Since at that time I was a painter, I will use the term painting size in this story.

As a painter it is tempting to make small paintings. As a painting student it is even more tempting to make small painting......

Infrared Photography with a Modified Canon 20D
"I always admire well done landscape images shot in Infrared. It's a technology and technique that I have never explored myself until now. The main reason for my not investigating IR work sooner has been the hassles involved in working with Infrared materials. IR film needs special handling in the field as well as during processing. The use of IR f......
