Image Sushi: Sometimes RAW is Better

Published by: Vivid Light Photography       09-24-2005        Read Complete Article
Article Summary

The JPEG vs. TIFF debate has pretty much been resolved. Today the question is should I shoot JPEG or RAW?

One prevailing theory is if you do everything right, as you would have to do when shooting film, and nail the image, JPEG will provide high quality, publishable images.

In a perfect world where we all get the chance to shoot as much as possible and our skills are honed to razor sharpness I would agree whole-heartedly. But there are times when photographers may want to consider shooting in Raw mode.....Read Complete Article

For The Love of Loons
What draws the attention of most viewers when it comes to the visual aspects of nature photography?

For starters vivid colors, great light and good composition. The indigo bunting, scarlet tanager, a male wood duck, puffins, pileated woodpeckers and so many more come to mind.

However, here in the Green Mountains of Vermont one of the mo......

Thirty Minutes for the Birds
I live in one of the most beautiful spots in the country. My home in northwestern New Jersey is on rolling forested hillsides with the Blue Ridge section of New Jersey's Appalachian Mountains rising up behind. The ridge is actually the first escarpment of Pennsylvania's Pocono Mountains. Although urbanization is happening all too fast in the surrou......

Disposable Underwater (Film) Cameras
It's winter here in the U.S. But while it's a bone chilling 8 degrees outside my office today, it's balmy and warm in Florida, the American Southwest and the Caribbean, which is why so many of you are headed to those places for vacation right about now.

For those of you lucky enough to be heading off to warmer climes we have a review on unde......

Why are we afraid to ask the most basic questions?
In photography, light is the tool with which we work. Cameras, lenses and a whole host of related doo-dads are simply tools that help us harness light. Most folks who get serious about photography get pretty good at the basics of camera operation and exposure, and after a while their images are sharp and well composed.

But I would venture tha......

Capturing the Mood of Vermont
Though not as geographically diverse as many Western states, and certainly much smaller, Vermont has some of the most breathtaking scenery in the Eastern U.S. From waterfalls and wildlife refuges, to ponds, streams, wetlands and Eastern hardwood forests, Vermont offers any inspiring nature photographer the ability to capture many unique, creative a......

Hot Air Heaven
Fall is here. The smell of green chile and propane is in the air again! If you've ever been to the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, you'll know why I look forward to those things. If you haven't been to the Balloon Fiesta, you should start planning to visit the annual nine day celebration that occurs the first full week of October.......

What you should know before you backup your photos to CD
It's a common task in the digital darkroom. It's how we back up our images and for some of us, how we store them. For film shooters Photo CDs are their entry into the digital world. Just about every lab now offers the option of a photo CD when they develop your film and Kodak even offers a "digital" point and shoot disposable film camera, the Kodak......

Digital Cameras. Just Another Tool?
I've never quite understood why some photographers get so hung up on shaving hairs about what lens/camera/flash is just a tad better than another. Check out the news groups and camera forums and you can find people debating these points to death. The truth is, when someone looks at an image, they could care less what hardware was used to create it......

Let the Weather Affect Your Photography
Well, it's that time of year again. I've just come back from the last of my fall tours. I'm satisfied, tired, and mentally taxed. I've had another successful tour season with great folks, and tremendous photographic opportunities. Wow! What's left, I mean the leaves have fallen, the wind is blowing cold air, and all that's worth shooting is gone un......

Essential Filters for Nature Photography
The use of filters in photography has always been a sensitive subject in regards to creating images that don't "look real". Comments such as "It's not what you're really seeing" or, "you're doctoring the image" have surfaced and resurfaced over the years.

The number of filters on the market today is mind boggling. You have general filters, cr......

Should Photography be Illegal?
In Seattle, police ban a photography student from a public park. He was taking photographs of a bridge for a homework assignment. The officers who ban him from the park do so without the knowledge of park officials and have no authority to do so. In Texas a man is first threatened by neighbors and then reportedly accosted and sprayed with pepper sp......

The Joys of Kayaking and Photography
Nature photographers face endless challenges when on land, but none seem quite as challenging as creating images from a kayak. When first introduced to kayaking, my initial goal was to photograph loons. I was fascinated by this prehistoric bird, its unique spine-chilling calls, its vibrant red eye, and its distinct black and white pattern.......

Valuable Photoshop Plug-ins
As you might imagine, photo editors sometimes find themselves swamped with invitations to test new products by photographic marketing people. While this may sound like a lot of fun and a way to get free stuff, there comes with it the responsibility to do a thorough job reviewing a product even though the product may not be of interest to the editor......

Isn't it the picture that matters?
This is a very good article that discusses what you often read about in the newsgroups. "Was that picture taken with film or with a digital camera?" When you're done reading this article from Gary Stanley I think you'll know the truth. It doesn't really matter.......
